Acupuncture for Infertility

Infertility has long been recognized as a stressful situation for couples. Research continues to reveal that a person’s state of mind and stress level has an impact on their health.

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical treatment method which consider the well-being and physical health as a whole. It focuses on regulating the imbalance of the whole body, and bring the energy imbalance back to normal. Which means acupuncture can improve overall feelings of well-being and may even increase the opportunity for a successful outcome when used in conjunction with conventional medical treatment.

The sooner you start getting yourself back into balance, the better your chances of remedying your imbalance and restoring your reproductive capacity.

Acupuncture is found very helpful in treating a patient who has been diagnosed with PCOS and is trying to conceive. It works by regulating hormone levels, losing weight and reducing stress.

During the initial treatment, acupuncturist would use Chinese medical diagnosis method such as taking palpitation and watching tongue to decide which pattern of imbalance the patient has, according which the treatment plan such as acupuoints selection, frequency and duration would be decided.  In addition, the severity of the PCOS, the patient’s constitutional level, and whether or not a patient is undergoing a medicated fertility treatment cycle are also taken into consideration upon the treatment plan.

It is believed by traditional Chinese medicine practitioners that acupuncture will work better for the treatment of infertility when combined with the use of Chinese herbs. Chinese herbs are helpful to restore the energy balance of the body.

Under the proper guidance of a licensed practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine, the Chinese herbal formulas specifically tailored to your Chinese medical diagnosis will be very helpful.

However, most reproductive endocrinologists discourage the use of herbs during a medicated cycle. This is because there is very little scientific data on the interaction between prescription fertility drugs and medicinal quality herbs.

Therefore, we prefer to use Chinese herbs for patients during natural cycles and between ART cycles.

Research for Acupuncture and Infertility

It has been demonstrated in medical research that acupuncture is helpful with all stages in the fertility journey from conception to delivery by regulating the menses and hormones, increasing the blood flow to the uterus and ovarian response function, improving sperm count and success rate of IVF, relieving stress and hormone treatments side effects, etc.

Systematic reviews of collected clinical research outcomes show that acupuncture prior to and after IVF embryo transfer improves rates of pregnancy and live birth among women undergoing in vitro fertilization.

Results of another study, which is conducted by Reproductive Endocrinology specialist Dr. Paul Magarelli, suggest an “astonishing” 15% increase in pregnancies and 23% increase in take-home babies in IVF patients treated with acupuncture.
